Knowledge Beyond School

0

As we all know, school is not really enough to provide us useful knowledge about the world and about life in general. Though not all the time, of course there are many information from different levels of school that are very helpful and important; be it practical or abstract philosophical matters. However, all people must know that learning should never really stop from there. In addition, people must also learn to be critical about what they’ve studied from school. There are so many things we have to learn and understand in life and the times spent on school education alone are very limited compared to the vastness of the scope of life. This is why it is important to each and all of us to discover learning from different aspects of existence such as the environment (ex. other people, libraries/books, the available technology, etc.) and of course, from our experiences.

However, it is also important to be careful and as much as possible, seek guidance or at least do not immediately jump into conclusions when you encounter exciting new information. Just like any other things, knowledge when not used properly or when inappropriate might also be dangerous or harmful not only to your self but also to others as well. And another thing is that of course, as always, there are bad people or institutions that are lurking for innocent victims to use or prey upon for their own advantage and interests. These kinds of people deliberately provide information/knowledge everywhere they can just to take advantage or do harm instead of good. Nonetheless, when critically assessed and properly applied, knowledge is a very useful and essential tool for us to grow and thrive as an individual and as a society.

So, have you ever thought about what topics do you really like to learn and what issues really capture your interest? Do you like biology, ecology, or the issues about the environment, animals, and plants? Are you interested about personal development, psychology, philosophy and other related topics? Are you a fan of arts and music especially those that convey meaningful lyrics or messages? Are you into spirituality and other esoteric or new age stuff? Do you love to learn about places, culture, or sociology in general? Or are you a fan of archaeology and ancient history that also loves to watch documentaries about aliens? Are ancient technologies a fascination to you? There is absolutely nothing wrong with having interest about these things but just be sure to be critical and careful.

So anyway if you want additional sources for your studies and learning hobby, in case you don’t know these sites yet, here are some that you might want to check out:

What is Ethical Business?

1

With the seemingly rapid deterioration of the environment and the endless bad news about labor exploitation, including the exploitation of young children in some parts of the world, many people these days ask themselves – how can I establish a morally-grounded business? What kinds of mindset, values, behaviors and attitudes should I hold on to? These are very important questions to ask to oneself when starting an ethical enterprise. It is crucial to think about sustainability; however sustainability should also mean decency, fairness, and honesty.

According to David Hagenbuch, a professor of Marketing at Messiah College, if one wants a guiltless business, it is important to hold integrity as one of its highest standards. This means one is open about what his business does and is able to show everything what the public needs to see without shame and fear. Honesty, as what Hagenbuch is trying to suggest, is a vital factor for a truly successful enterprise. This also means your business should not deceive people by using inaccurate projection to look attractive just to draw attention and positive feedback. He means that in promoting your services, creativity is important but this should also be used in a forthright yet genuine manner. Deceitful fabrication, as Hagenbuch suggests, will only ruin your company’s reputation in the long run.

To understand more about these suggestions, one can also take these “dilemma scenarios” presented by the EU Science Hub – Joint Research Centre as examples. In facing challenges, one can ask himself – what should be the right thing to do? Is this action legal or will it break the law? Is it socially allowed or should you just don’t care? Is it morally upright or an act of corruption? Will you benefit without compromising others? Is it fair to all parties involved? These are just some of the questions one needs to ask to himself to establish and develop a strong ethical underpinning for a business – for people, for the planet, and for a “clean” profit.

Speaking about the planet or nature, how can a business protect and wok for its sustainability? We all know that endless growth is one of the major causes of our depleting finite natural resources. According to Hagenbuch’s idea, the company should intelligently come up with efficient strategies and wasteful consumption should not be tolerated.  The business should only take not more than what they need and show this virtue as an example to the customers. Environmental sustainability should be the company’s main concern, according to what Hagenbuch is trying to convey; a business should only execute properly brainstormed ideas to avoid destroying the environment.

So these are some of the important points David Hagenbuch is trying to point out for people starting an organization, big o small, to exist and thrive along with the customers without compromising both humans and nature in general. As what Hagenbuch has tried to elaborate on his many writings – actively participating in ecological stewardship, practicing fairness, and preserving integrity are very essential things to an organization for it to maintain efficient long-term schemes for acquiring profit while also conserving society’s well-being.

How to Guide Your Own Transition and Growth

0

As we grow old in this life we encounter so many unfamiliar things and we discover various things that would later become part of our sense of identity; influencing our actions and thoughts and the way we organize ourselves towards our future; in cohesion to the community and the society we live in. Along with this, we experience pain, terror, joy, anger, bliss, etc. but we grow from these experiences and from our mistakes if we sincerely answer to the realizations our inner self is showing us. An in this process of transition, we become mature in the aspect of our metaphysical self; thus, we gain enough amount of wisdom that help strengthens our mental aspect and virtues as a person, allowing us to become more resilient and healthy in traversing our journey.

To guide their emotional and psychological growth, here are some of the things that “self-aware” people do or try to maintain:

Accepting errors and mistakes

Of course, people with healthy minds know that perfection does not exist and that in our daily decisions and choices, it’s normal to commit mistakes. That’s why it’s necessary to accept that no one is perfect and that things don’t turn out well all the time as we want them to be.

Forgiving their parents

Most of us have tough childhood and we carry this on our present. It is helpful to be aware about our negative feelings towards our past and instead, turn it into acceptance for us to be able to heal from our trauma and unfulfilled childhood needs. For most of us, our parents have their part in letting our inner void grow wider and deeper as a kid but however, understand that they are unaware victims of dysfunctional family system too so much like us so it’s better to remove bitterness from your heart and work harder for your personal development.

Empathizing to people

Sometimes, people commit errors and behave badly or irrationally because of their unstable mental condition or their stress and problems in life. So this is not permanent. Understanding that other people’s negative behaviors are sometimes because of fear, insecurity, negative experiences, or anxiety and not necessarily because they are stupid or horrid is very important to help us maintain our sense of freedom.

Conveying message properly and clearly

Knowing that your thoughts cannot be easily understood by others is very important. People don’t see imagery of your mind when they look or listen to you that’s why you have to express your feelings and intentions well with calmness and clarity.

Knowing their thoughts and its emotional impact

Understand the nature of mood and your feelings and its influence on your actions and decisions. It is very important to cultivate emotional intelligence and to learn how to control or at least guide your feelings, especially anger, because they can negatively affect your quality of life

Letting go of unnecessary grievances and resentments

Most of us are somehow victims of poverty and some sense of social inequality. Most of us are economically struggling; working too much to provide ourselves the basic needs while others grow richer and richer without so much effort and even by exploiting other people and including the environment. However, constantly clamoring against the people we can’t see and talk to will only destroy us in the long run. That’s why do not let hatred dwells in your heart; reclaim your life because you are not always a worthless victim of oppression.

And lastly, practicing honest and proper communication skills

Spiritually elevated people are individuals that have higher realizations from experiences in life. And being one, they always try to be assertive, clear, and honest in their communication style. In talking to other people, they are neither aggressive nor passive and they always make sure that their thoughts and desires are expressed, understood, and acknowledged properly.

Are You a Game Changer?

Individual and organizational roles, tasks, and skills for social change and progress

Being a responsible and active citizen is not easy especially if someone wants to be heavily involved in his or her community, doing many tasks for various projects. Though, it is an exciting thing to do to our lives as it gives more meaning given that there will always be challenges in places or communities where we live, big or small. In addition, social activism could also a very spiritually fulfilling task if everything is well put into balance as we can be a catalyst for positive changes in our locality or even to the whole world. However, from the individual to the organizational level, people must really identify which role they can be effective so that the their community, group, or organization can successfully create changes or make something better such as policies, systems, and even customs that are oppressive or unfair to others. By carefully identifying the needs of the organization and knowing your focus, you can become more efficient.

Choosing the appropriate roles saves time and energy and it can also help you as an individual and as a group fulfill important tasks or goals systematically. If you want to “change the game”, you must first learn how to play so you can come up with new ideas that are relevant and not useless. First, you must be truly responsible so people can respect your ideas and views as they see them being practiced. You must show sincerity in helping to keep your community safe, peaceful, and productive so that people will believe your words and support you when you say or propose something. Always remember that you chose to be an agent of progress so it is your chosen role to make the public aware and involved on these changes for them to have better understanding and motivation to act. Whether creating positive solutions in the community level or offering alternatives to unfair policies on the regional level, activists must learn how to be a real reformer who is smart and knowledgeable regarding the laws, society, and institutions.

As an activist who is dedicated to bring changes to the society/community, you might focus your energy on establishing and maintaining an effective communication strategy with other stake holders and even people who are in the position and has the power to make changes on the governmental level. You must develop this skill for you to have a real impact on your targets and for you to function effectively on so many levels such as judicial, city hall, corporate, etc. Being well-versed on strategic actions such as lobbying, rallies, petitions, and even legal aspects are some of the best ways to sustain an advocacy or reform something.

Photo: TheCultureTrip | Why languages are at the forefront of student activism in africa

As an individual, we are all somehow doing actions directly whether intentionally or not. Some of our actions break rules and defy laws even without us knowing it. However, for sure there are many times that we do this consciously because we know something is not right and that we have to do what we know is better even if that means the opposite, right? State laws are not an exception. But the point here is that with our simple direct actions, we contribute to the change or the collective as a citizen. Our dedication to the preservation of individual freedom, values, justice, principles, democracy, etc. motivates us to help and contribute to the society.

Lastly, having the right skills for gathering resource persons and inviting audiences and participants is also very important in creating social change. People have different interests and it is the role of an organizer to start a social movement and win the trust of all the involved people or groups for them to establish a connection and collaboration. Getting more support, spreading the campaign to a broader audience, and starting a sense of solidarity for a concrete action while also keeping the advocacy active is also very important task of an agent of change. Organizing and educating the communities and helping to keep them engaged are some of the important component for democracy and social progress. To be truly effective on this task, one must learn the science and the art of promoting strategies to the grassroots and securing long term engagements to ensure success in creating alternatives and better paradigm.

Goals and Expectations

1
popular new year goals or resolutions - colorful sticky notes on a blackboard

Do you have expectations in life that you are still strongly attached in? If so, there are few things you might want to learn or re-learn about them. If we are a goal-oriented person, most of the time we want things to run smooth or to be well-organized so that we can enjoy more from the essence of them. However, sometimes things might turn out different. Though, it is normal for our brain to expect some results so that in our mind we can project the picture of success of a certain action or idea we are trying to carry out; a kind of psychological security we give to ourselves possibly out of fear of failure or losing something.

Photo: 123rf.com

However, without being aware of the consequences of expectations we subject our minds to might lead us to further psychological turmoil and disappointment instead. Through my experience, I slowly learned that the best thing to do is to take back the control of our mind from too much expectation to things or situations through awareness about the many possibilities or circumstances that might unfold in your so-called future. I am not good at practicing this yet but I’m sure it really helped me somewhere along my journey.

Photo: Actenviro | Goals vs Expectations

It is totally normal for our brain to project a possibility but this doesn’t mean it will happen that’s why it is very important to be open-minded and always be prepared for whatever may come. As a person with visions and goals for a kind of community and environment I want to live in, it is normal for me to have expectations. If you are like me who are into non-profit and community works (or even in your personal life), of course you have objectives and goals so it means you are trying to establish, create, or build something that’s why you have certain expectations and ideal outcomes from your actions. This doesn’t always mean a negative trait; some people just want to be mathematical and scientific. And also, these are necessary or required for some situations or actions that have been taken. But with this kind of situation, it will be more challenging compared to individuals who don’t have much anything to do with these kinds of interests and passion. So to think through these seemingly complex conflicting situations, it is really important to discuss how to navigate and what tools should we use to navigate this ocean.

Photo: Philross | Smart Goals

Recognizing and accepting the present moment while transforming them if necessary is one of the first things we must do. Since goals and expectations are projection into the future, one must always remember that the future is not the present moment yet and still anything can happen there. So for a person to enjoy the now and to see how to improve it, one must focus on it with mindful eyes while also celebrate the good things that are part of it. Also, meeting your expectations is really a great thing but you must always remember that our mind can sometimes get so anxious where it doesn’t stop desiring things and the more we get what we want, usually, the more we strive to have some more. If we are not aware enough, in the process this can give us many unhealthy psychological and emotional consequences and will never provide us real satisfaction as we worry and expect for more without appreciating the situation or thing we currently have. Besides, always put in mind that most instant gratifications are just temporary experiences.

Photo: On Hold | Popular New Year Goals or Resolutions Colorful Sticky Notes On

Another thing one must avoid is unrealistic goals. Believing how things the way should be is a very human thing as our minds have been designed to be like this by evolution throughout unimaginable amount of time. However, the trick is to always recognize the duality of everything in the universe so therefore have some, as what the Stoics call, negative visualization or a sort of. It means that be mindful that what you expect might turned out the opposite of what you idealized; unwanted instead of desired ones. So since you have goals (I supposed and it’s better than having none), just always be realistic and make sure they are achievable. Goals and expectations that are unrealistic are mostly huge ones and usually bigger expectations easily cause burnout so just start small and take things easy but of course, surely! Lastly, you must really be prepared for whatever outcome because the world is not only black and white, so be imaginative and creative and appreciate other colors. In short, just do your best to achieve your goals but do not expect too much.

How to Live a Life Without Expectations and Disappointment?

Three Habits That Can Leave You Emotionally Exhausted

Existential Purpose and the Reality of Right and Wrong

0

Today many people on this earth believe that there are no universal right and wrong things within the reality, that the nature of every human action differs by how individual interprets them and see them, and that the concept of good and bad is relative and doesn’t really have physical/material/experiential grounding. For many of these people, they see morality only as a religious value and not as a common experiential result of our intellectual/psychological and cultural struggle and evolution; things that society carried and continued upon because it works and serves a well function for social maintenance, subsistence, and growth. Many people of today believe that all realities are not absolute and that it’s up to individual to define the truth and that we don’t need morality to exist as a society. However, to some this brings out serious concerns for so many valid reasons.

Photo: www.youtube.com/watch?v=GM51IVl9Yy0

To challenge the philosophical underpinning of this idea, let’s consider these situations. For example, if a person comes to you and says that he wants to collaborate with you and that he would like to help you on a certain project that he’s really interested in but then after few days or months, just stop supporting you for no reason and leave you without explanation, would you get disappointed? If a man makes so much promises and impregnate a woman but then leave her without looking back and without responsibility for the child, would it make the woman (and the child) happy and feel secured? Of course the straight answer to these questions is no! This is the reason why this idea of “there is no right and wrong or good and bad” is a dangerous kind of thinking. What if your valuable stuff gets stolen, how would you feel? What if a random person slaps your face for no reason? What if someone wants to rape you or your daughter? What if someone enjoys killing people? What if someone wants to burn houses? What about the war, plunder, and genocide? These are some of the numerous questions that one should think about.

Photo: innerself.com/content/personal/happiness-and-self-help/life-purpose/10063-existential-maturity.html

Despite the fact that the universe looks random and purposeless, I personally believe that there should still be a purpose (or a self-chosen purpose at least) for each of us in this existence. I mean this not in a Christian or any established religious sense of perspective or definition but at least for a human or societal reason. If we want to have a peaceful and thriving society or humanity, then there should be common grounds for us to coexist, a sort of agreement for us to respect and constantly improve. Think about other species or organisms of this planet for example, in nature, all of us exist in relation to other’s existence; a symbiosis of different living entities, micro to macro, interconnected through the web of life and relying on the same land, water, and air to live.

Photo: laleggepertutti.it/151796_su-che-lato-della-strada-bisogna-camminare

From a mathematical perspective, and as the laws of physics suggest, almost everything in the matrix of our ecosystem is calculable through the representational thing called numbers. In the nature of the universe, everything has its own function. Though, this doesn’t mean that the law of physics could not be defied and that we should always consider it as a basis for everything. It can be defied or changed but however, it is important to put in mind that there is always a consequence and that it may result to either favorable or unfavorable outcome. This is the law of cause and effect. But no matter what, science and philosophy tells us that there are proper and improper ways of seeing/defining things and that there are situations that need to be prevented.

Tools for Positive Social Change: Practical Skills

0

In a practical sense, it is somehow unfortunate that many people do not possess social skills that are very important in navigating the society we live in. Some examples of these things I’m talking about are knowledge (and application) of conflict resolution techniques, communication skills, community building, etc. What’s worse is that many people think they don’t really need these social tools in dealing with their daily affairs, their relationships, and their social life in general as they think all of these are just simple things that can be learned just by experience. The truth is that many people end up messing their life and their relationship to others because of the ignorance that they are trying to preserve within themselves.

For example, if you try to look with enough attention you will notice how communities and societies are being endlessly torn apart by simple conflicts and misunderstandings. Most of the time, people fight and destroy each other over very small and sometimes even senseless issues in their community or even families. Unfortunately, many people end up in jail or in hospitals for these absurd matters and other communication fault conflicts. All throughout history, it is clear that miscommunication plays a very big role in people’s conflicts and troubles as most people do not know how to listen, assert, and deliver their message properly. If not avoiding them, people easily mishandle and allow the conflict to escalate as they are not equipped with abilities to manage and resolve them.

Photo: Opendemocracy.net | What role were you born to play in social change

Flaws and conflicts exist in many aspects and layers of our social life especially in these times of full-blown technological and political revolution. If not given the right management, they could really potentially bring so much stress, miseries, and even serious troubles. However, if we can properly apply the skills needed to resolve and prevent these flaws, it will be easier for us to make our lives better and our relationship to one another healthy. In many parts of the world today, there are people, especially activists, who promote and teach these skills and they deserved to be supported as they are working to help make our world a better place. Some people advocate for these social tools and skills tirelessly, even at the expense of their lives. Obviously, these people deserve the right support and attention.

Imperfection and Self Compassion

0

Sometimes we become so cruel to ourselves when we commit mistakes. Without intentionally doing it, we often mutter negative words against ourselves when we make a mistake about something, sometimes even very insignificant mistakes that it isn’t really worth our time at all. But even if it is really a serious one, it’s always important to remember that this kind of impatience and punishment to one’s self can only make your distrust to your self worst and disturbing. In addition, it is also harmful to your psychology and to your self-esteem in general; a sense of disempowerment that negatively affects your emotional well-being, including your intuition and cognitive abilities. If you want to experience a life in its great essence, you need to be gentle to your self and process your growth in a caring and compassionate manner.

Photo: ascensionavatar.wordpress.com/2016/07/09/alexa-pellegrini-finding-beauty-self-awareness-and-growth-in-disappointment/

Being critical to our self is important but be sure to keep it in a balance state because our thoughts create our own realities. If we think we are not good enough, that we do not deserve enough, it will become our living manifestation. How can we achieve a sense of mastery to our life if we impair our own confidence and determination through our negative self-talks and complaints? How can we keep the motivation alive and work for our chosen purpose if we let this kind of self-sabotage surface and dominate our thinking? The best way to deal with our mistake is to accept them and then learn from them. In this way we are supporting ourselves and not wounding them. As humans, it is normal; we sometimes commit mistakes and make stupid decisions.

Photo: fineartamerica.com/art/paintings/self-forgiveness

No person should justify this kind of treatment to one’s self. Instead of throwing up reasons why you think that way, you must try to gain more confidence for your willpower using the lesson from your mistakes. You must cultivate patience and try to ride the waves of emotion not by unconsciously acting out on them but by projecting on to the best results it can produce. We must always put in mind that there can never be defence whatsoever for this kind of mental self-impairment and it should be stopped for us to grow and be more responsible towards life. Negative words and self-blame does not really do any better than to excuse yourself from having a true sense of responsibility for your actions. It is not being honest with your self but being intolerant to your shortcomings and weaknesses.

Photo: steemit.com/life/@newandold/stop-limiting-yourself-using-self-compassion-compassion-part-2

As a normal rational being capable of looking within our mind, we all do self-examination. In this process, it is important that we need to be conscious so that we don’t bring further damage and hindrance to our individuation, as Carl Jung put it. Self-actualization takes so much time and energy and it is necessary for all of us to deeply understand our existence in this world and therefore have a determination to support and help our self and others. Blaming, belittling, and dismissing yourself in times of errors is a very unhealthy way to treat one’s self and no person deserves this. Responding to our failings, frustrations, guilt, dissatisfaction, and other kinds of so-called negative experiences and emotions needs mindfulness and it also needs gentleness just like how we respond when our friends commit simple mistakes unintentionally. Again, this is called self-compassion.

Importance of having a Thinking Mindset (Inspired by Jordan Peterson)

0

Many people put their potentials to waste by thinking that they are not good enough or that they are not strong enough to face the harshness of the outside world. Many people disempower themselves further by wallowing on the idea that they are a victim of an unfortunate circumstance or an oppressive deed for the rest of their lives; sticking on a very counterproductive mindset. They underestimate the fact they, as a human, a dynamic intellectual and spiritual being, has enough capacity to beat most challenges that come no matter how tough or overpowering it seems to be.

It is somehow true that life is harsh and that being tough or strong all the time is very tiring but it is necessary for each and every one of us to confront the suffering voluntarily. Accepting to ourselves that we cannot do better, that we don’t have enough capacity, and that many problems and challenges are too much for us to have a healthy life is somewhat a very toxic thing for our mind. Not only that, it is also very harmful to our families and to the society in general. For us to succeed and to constantly advance in life, we must defy our fears and our obstacles by making our self stronger and smarter every day. Only by doing this we can realize that we are way stronger than what we think and that we are full of potentials.

Photo: adamvi.com/2019/01/20/women-stood-up-now-its-time-for-men-and-companies-to-follow/

One of the things we can also do to prevent from being trampled by life’s severity is to have a kind of mindset that is really conscious, creative, and productive. We should prioritize and practice the things that make us better – physically, mentally, and therefore, spiritually if we want to pursue meaning and purpose in life. We should not let other people define us or limit us by simply accepting their negative judgements or labels on us. We should not let pessimism and laziness take over our journey and our fate in this existence. Just because it is true that life is anguish contaminated by wickedness doesn’t mean that we can’t create and live a good life. Just remember, for us to win the battles in this society, we must have a thinking mindset!

Instead of thinking that you are weak or not resilient enough, you should start taking the responsibility for your self and realize that you can actually counter that situation and use these self-doubts to improve your physical, emotional, and your intellectual capacities. As the saying goes, don’t be a weak loser!

Grassroots Intellectualism

0

Are you being disturbed by how our society behaves today in relation to our environment? Are you worried about the seemingly collective intellectual deterioration of our civilization? Are you sad about the possible fate of humanity amidst this approaching technological apocalypse? If this is the case, you must take part to change this reality by contributing what you can; by using your intellect, knowledge, and your voice along with your skills and talents to spread helpful ideas and solutions to our collective problem. By joining a group or movement that promotes useful knowledge and intellectual growth, local or international/online, you are helping the humanity survive this current global crisis we are experiencing. This is because knowledge is one of the most crucial weapons we must use to face this astonishingly difficult situation we are having today.

Photo: cigarcitymagazine.com/cigar-city

There are so many ways to express our thoughts and our concern for our society and the environment such as through writing (books, articles, stories, etc.), making documentaries, arts, and other forms of creativity each of us have. Regardless of your preferences and in which medium you are comfortable with, your effort is so essential to add impact to the solutions we want to manifest in the world for ourselves and for future generation. No matter how small the contribution is, if being done consistently, it will surely bring significant outcomes to us and to the society in the long run. We must remember that the important thing is that we share the wisdom we have gathered to make this world a better place again by any means possible. And by being active in different issues or campaigns, we can support each other improve things.

Photo: kqed.org/mindshift/18205/the-public-library-as-an-incubator-for-the-arts

Another thing we can do to help solve our social issues or problems is to establish a place for people to learn more ideas, philosophies, lifestyles / practices, and other kinds of subjects related to our existence as human society. We can have more community libraries, for example, or even just simple spaces that we can read, watch educational films, or discuss matters that are relevant. If we are regularly having these kinds of activities, for sure there will be more positive changes and results we will experience. The idea is to bring intellectualism to the grassroots level. Because the problem is that, people, specifically the masses, have been so detached from this culture of learning in their daily lives. Pre-occupied with financial worries and work pressures, most of them have lost their interest in improving their mental aspect.

Photo: fairmountcommunitylibraryfw.org/

Somehow, it is the role of the so-called intellectuals or people who have enough knowledge/wisdom for our society, who read a lot and really care about their fellow human being, to bring this culture to the ground; use it to regain strength, for our society and the environment. Are you ready to go down the rabbit hole and join the intellectual battle?
